Overview
SBI's dedicated overseas education loan product is called the Global Ed-Vantage Scheme, built specifically for Indian students heading abroad for full-time regular Graduate, Post-Graduate, Diploma, Certificate, or Doctorate programmes at recognised foreign institutions. Being India's largest public sector bank, SBI is often the first stop for students comparing loan options, thanks to its branch network, relatively lower interest rates, and a faster digital application process compared to some competitors.
Loan amount under this scheme typically ranges between ₹20 lakh and ₹1.5 crore (higher amounts are considered case-by-case for top-ranked global universities). For students admitted to institutes on SBI's premier list, the bank waives collateral requirements for loans up to ₹50 lakh — a significant relief for families who don't want to pledge property.
Besides Global Ed-Vantage, SBI also runs other loan products (General/Student Loan, Scholar Loan for IIT/IIM/NIT admits, Skill Loan, and SBI Shaurya for defence and coast guard families) but Global Ed-Vantage is the one relevant for students planning to study outside India.
Eligible expenses covered under the loan:
- Tuition fee payable to the college/school/hostel
- Examination, library, and laboratory fees
- Travel expenses and passage money to the destination country
- Purchase of books, equipment, instruments, uniforms, and a computer, where required for the course
- Caution deposit or refundable deposit (capped at 10% of total tuition fee for the course)
- Other course-related costs such as study tours, project work, or thesis expenses
- Premium for SBI's "RiNn Raksha" loan protection insurance, if opted for
Eligibility
To apply for an SBI Global Ed-Vantage loan, a student generally needs to meet the following:
- Must be an Indian national
- Must have secured admission to a regular, full-time Graduate/Post-Graduate/Diploma/Certificate/Doctorate programme at a recognised university abroad (confirmed via an offer/admission letter)
- The course and institution should ideally feature on SBI's approved university list — this affects both loan eligibility and whether collateral-free funding is available
- A co-applicant/co-borrower (usually a parent or guardian) is required for the loan
- Satisfactory academic record and, where applicable, qualifying scores in entrance tests such as GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, or IELTS
Collateral requirements scale with the loan amount - no collateral is needed for many premier-institute admits up to ₹50 lakh, while higher amounts or non-listed institutions may require third-party guarantee or tangible security.
Documents required
While the exact checklist can vary slightly by branch and loan amount, students are typically asked to submit:
- Duly filled loan application form with a passport-size photograph
- Proof of identity: Passport, Aadhaar, PAN, or Driving Licence
- Proof of residence: recent utility bill (electricity/telephone/water/gas, not older than 2 months) or Passport/Driving Licence
- Proof of admission: offer/admission letter from the foreign institution
- Entrance exam scorecard (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), where applicable
- Academic records: mark sheets and certificates from previous qualifying exams
- Income proof and bank statements of the co-applicant/guarantor (usually last 6 months)
- Collateral security documents, if applicable to the loan amount
- Course fee structure/cost sheet from the university
- Aadhaar card (mandatory if applying under any Government of India interest subsidy scheme)
Repayment
- Loans are sanctioned as term loans repayable through EMIs over a maximum of 15 years (180 EMIs)
- For Global Ed-Vantage and Student Loans meant for study abroad, EMI repayment begins 6 months after course completion
- During the course period and this moratorium, interest accrues and gets added to the principal; the EMI is then calculated on this combined amount unless the borrower chooses to service the interest during the moratorium itself, in which case EMIs are calculated only on the principal
- Interest is calculated on a daily reducing balance basis, and there's no penalty for prepaying the loan
- Eligible students from economically weaker sections or specific communities may also benefit from Government interest subsidy schemes (such as the Central Scheme for Interest Subsidy, Padho Pardesh, or Dr. Ambedkar Scheme) that cover interest during the moratorium period
How to apply
- Check eligibility and shortlist the scheme - confirm your university/course is on SBI's approved list for the Global Ed-Vantage scheme, since this affects the collateral-free limit.
- Apply online via the Vidya Lakshmi portal (vidyalakshmi.co.in) or SBI's own online application system, or visit the nearest SBI branch to apply offline.
- Submit documents - upload or submit the admission letter, KYC documents, academic records, and income/collateral documents of the co-applicant.
- Verification and sanction - the branch verifies documents and, where relevant, evaluates collateral; SBI allows sanction even before the visa or I-20 is issued, which helps with visa-interview timelines.
- Loan agreement and disbursal - once sanctioned, the loan agreement is signed and funds are disbursed directly to the university or as per the fee payment schedule, typically in instalments aligned with each semester/year.
SBI Education Loan 2026: Interest Rates, Schemes, Eligibility and SBI Education Loan for Study Abroad
An SBI education loan is a term loan from State Bank of India that funds higher studies in India or abroad for Indian nationals who have secured admission. For study abroad, SBI's Global Ed-Vantage scheme lends above ₹7.50 lakh and up to ₹3 crore at 9.40% p.a. (8.90% for girl students), with collateral-free loans up to ₹50 lakh at select universities, sanction before your I-20 or visa, and repayment over up to 15 years.
That is the short answer. The longer one matters, because SBI does not run just one education loan. It runs a family of schemes, and the one you land in decides your interest rate, whether you need property as security, how much you pay upfront and when your EMIs begin. This guide lays out every scheme, the verified 2026 numbers, real EMI calculations and the mistakes that quietly cost families lakhs.

What Is an SBI Education Loan?
An SBI education loan is a floating-rate term loan granted to Indian nationals to pay for higher education after admission is confirmed. The student is the main borrower, and a parent or guardian joins as co-borrower. SBI pays fees directly to the institution, charges simple interest while you study, and starts EMIs only after the course and a repayment holiday are over.
SBI introduced India's first structured education loans decades ago and today offers separate products for Indian colleges, premier institutes, foreign universities, skill courses, defence families and loan transfers. That breadth is its real strength: most students can find a scheme that fits, provided they know which one to ask for.

How SBI Calculates Your Education Loan Interest Rate (EBR Explained)
Every SBI education loan rate is built on the External Benchmark Rate. SBI defines it as the RBI repo rate plus a spread. Right now the repo rate is 5.25% and the spread is 2.65%, which gives an EBR of 7.90%. Your scheme then adds its own margin on top.
Your rate | EBR | Scheme margin over EBR |
|---|---|---|
9.90% (Student Loan, no collateral) | 7.90% | 2.00% |
9.40% (Global Ed-Vantage standard) | 7.90% | 1.50% |
8.90% (select institutions with collateral / girl students) | 7.90% | 1.00% |
Why this matters: when the RBI cuts the repo rate, your EMI can fall; when it hikes, your EMI rises. SBI also reports a mean education loan rate of 9.31% for Q1 FY27, a handy benchmark when you compare offers from other lenders.

SBI Education Loan Collateral and Security Rules
Loan amount / scheme | Security required |
|---|---|
Student Loan up to ₹7.50 lakh | Parent or guardian as co-borrower only. No collateral, no third-party guarantee |
Student Loan above ₹7.50 lakh | Parent or guardian as co-borrower plus tangible collateral |
Global Ed-Vantage (standard) | Tangible collateral security; third-party collateral (other than parents) is accepted |
Global Ed-Vantage at select institutions | No collateral up to ₹50 lakh |
What SBI Accepts as Collateral
Immovable security | Movable security |
|---|---|
Land or building with clear title (sale deed and chain-of-title documents) | Bank deposits (TDR, STDR, RD) |
Approved plan, development agreement and conveyance deed for new property | Insurance policies (SBI Life, LIC) |
Non-agriculture land permission and construction permission where applicable | Government securities and PSU bonds |
Tax receipt, maintenance and electricity bills (share certificate in Maharashtra) | SBI Mutual Fund schemes (FMP / DAF) and FCNR deposits |
Margin Money in an SBI Education Loan
Margin is the part of the cost your family pays so the bank does not fund 100%. Under the Student Loan Scheme, there is no margin up to ₹4 lakh; above ₹4 lakh, the margin is 5% for studies in India and 15% for studies abroad.
Under Global Ed-Vantage, SBI counts scholarships and assistantships toward your margin, and you can bring the margin in year by year on a pro-rata basis with each disbursement instead of paying it all at once. Confirm the exact margin percentage with your sanctioning branch, because it is set in your sanction letter.
Example (Student Loan Scheme, study abroad): course cost ₹7,00,000. Margin at 15% = ₹1,05,000 paid by the family. Loan = ₹5,95,000. If the student has a ₹50,000 scholarship, that amount counts toward the margin, so the family adds only ₹55,000.
SBI Education Loan Processing Fee and Other Charges
Loan amount | Student Loan Scheme | Global Ed-Vantage |
|---|---|---|
Up to ₹10 lakh | Nil | Not applicable (starts above ₹7.50 lakh); 0.50%, minimum ₹10,000 |
Above ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh | ₹5,000 plus GST | 0.50%, minimum ₹10,000, plus GST |
Above ₹20 lakh | 0.50% of loan, maximum ₹25,000, plus GST | 0.50% of loan, maximum ₹50,000, plus GST |
For secured loans, budget separately for property valuation, legal title verification and mortgage-related stamp duty or registration, which vary by state. SBI's Education Loan MITC (Most Important Terms and Conditions) page lists the full charge schedule.
SBI Education Loan Repayment, Moratorium and EMI
Repayment term | Student Loan Scheme | Global Ed-Vantage |
|---|---|---|
Interest during course | Accrues; added to principal before EMI | Simple interest during course plus moratorium |
Repayment holiday | 12 months after course | 6 months after course |
Maximum tenure | 15 years from start of repayment | Up to 15 years |
If you pay interest while studying | EMI is fixed on principal only | Lower final EMI and lower total cost |
Second loan for further study | Combined loan repaid in 15 years after second course | As per sanction terms |
Worked EMI Examples for SBI Education Loan for Study Abroad
These examples assume a 2-year master's abroad, the full loan disbursed on day one (the costliest case), simple interest for 2.5 years (course plus 6-month holiday) added to principal, and a 15-year EMI at the same rate. Actual figures will be lower if disbursements are spread across semesters.
Scenario | Loan | Rate | Simple interest till EMI starts | Monthly EMI | Total repaid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Standard Global Ed-Vantage | ₹40 lakh | 9.40% | ₹9,40,000 | ₹51,287 | ₹92.32 lakh |
Same loan, girl student | ₹40 lakh | 8.90% | ₹8,90,000 | ₹49,307 | ₹88.75 lakh |
Collateral-free, select institution | ₹50 lakh | 9.40% | ₹11,75,000 | ₹64,109 | ₹1.15 crore |
Select institution with collateral | ₹60 lakh | 8.90% | ₹13,35,000 | ₹73,961 | ₹1.33 crore |
High-cost programme | ₹1 crore | 9.40% | ₹23,50,000 | ₹1,28,218 | ₹2.31 crore |
The Smartest Move: Pay the Simple Interest While You Study
Take the ₹40 lakh loan at 9.40%. If the family pays the simple interest (roughly ₹31,300 a month) during the 2.5 years, the EMI is calculated on ₹40 lakh instead of ₹49.4 lakh.
Approach | Monthly EMI | Total paid (including interest paid while studying) | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
Let interest accrue | ₹51,287 | ₹92.32 lakh | None |
Pay interest during course | ₹41,528 | ₹84.15 lakh | About ₹8.17 lakh |
Shorter tenures save even more. On the same ₹49.4 lakh repayment base, a 10-year EMI is about ₹63,652 (total ₹76.38 lakh) and a 5-year EMI is about ₹1,03,508 (total ₹62.10 lakh). SBI education loans float, so prepaying whenever you get a bonus or a raise shortens the loan fast.

How to Apply for SBI Education Loan Online
SBI routes its education loan "Apply Now" buttons to the Government's PM-Vidyalaxmi portal, so the online application starts there. Here is the sequence:
- Pick your scheme using the decision guide above, and check whether your university is on SBI's select list.
- Register on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal (pmvidyalaxmi.co.in), fill the common education loan application and choose State Bank of India as your lender.
- Upload documents for the student and co-borrower, including the admission letter and schedule of expenses.
- Visit the assigned SBI branch or processing centre with originals for verification when contacted.
- Complete collateral formalities (valuation and legal title check) if your loan is secured.
- Receive the sanction letter. For study abroad, this can come before your I-20 or visa and serves as proof of funds.
- Sign the loan documents, pay the processing fee and bring in the margin. SBI then disburses fees directly to the university as per its fee schedule.
You can also walk into any SBI branch and apply offline. Either way, the loan is processed by an SBI branch or processing centre.

Government Interest Subsidy Schemes Listed by SBI
SBI's education loan portal lists several Government interest subsidy schemes. Eligibility depends on family income, community category and the scheme's current status, so read the linked notes carefully:
- CSIS (Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme): interest subsidy on education loans for eligible students from economically weaker families.
- Padho Pardesh Interest Subsidy Scheme: for students from minority communities studying abroad. SBI's page carries an Important Note (IBA letter, May 2023) on its status, so confirm whether fresh applications are accepted before relying on it.
- Dr. Ambedkar Interest Subsidy Scheme for Overseas Studies: for OBC and EBC students studying abroad, also accompanied by an IBA note on SBI's page. Verify its current status first.
- PM-Vidyalaxmi: SBI's dedicated scheme for Government-selected QHEIs in India, with rates from 6.90%.
Tax Benefit on SBI Education Loan (Section 80E)
SBI lists a tax benefit under Section 80E on its Global Ed-Vantage page. Under this long-standing provision, the interest (not the principal) paid on an education loan for higher studies can be claimed as a deduction by the individual taxpayer, for up to eight years from the year repayment begins, with no upper cap. India's new Income-tax Act took effect in April 2026 and the regime you choose affects eligibility, so confirm the current section and conditions with a tax adviser before filing.
SBI Education Loan Myths vs Verified Facts
Plenty of guides online still carry older SBI terms. Here is what the official 2026 pages actually say:
Common claim | Verified fact (SBI, 2026) |
|---|---|
"SBI's maximum study abroad loan is ₹1.5 crore." | Global Ed-Vantage goes above ₹7.50 lakh up to ₹3.00 crore. |
"SBI never lends for study abroad without collateral." | Collateral-free up to ₹50 lakh for select premier institutions. |
"Processing fee is nil up to ₹20 lakh for abroad loans." | Global Ed-Vantage charges 0.50% (min ₹10,000, max ₹50,000) plus GST. The nil fee up to ₹10 lakh belongs to the Student Loan Scheme. |
"Repayment always starts 12 months after the course." | True for the Student Loan Scheme. Global Ed-Vantage repayment starts 6 months after the course. |

Expert Tips to Get Your SBI Education Loan Approved Faster
- Match the scheme to the university first. A select-list university can remove the need for collateral entirely.
- Build a clean schedule of expenses from the university's official cost of attendance. Loans are sized on this document.
- Check the co-borrower's credit report before applying and fix any overdue EMIs or card dues.
- Keep property papers title-clear. Missing links in the title chain are a common cause of delay on secured loans.
- Apply as soon as the offer arrives so the sanction letter is ready before visa filing.
- Verify the sanctioned rupee amount against the latest exchange rate and your fee structure before signing.
- Plan to service simple interest during the course if the family budget allows. It cuts lakhs from the total cost.
