Overview

Central Bank of India is a long-established public sector lender that has positioned its Cent Vidyarthi product as a financing route for Indian students heading overseas for higher studies. The bank operates through roughly 4,500 branches spread across 28 states, giving applicants wide access to in-person guidance. Loan proceeds are meant to be comprehensive - covering not just tuition but also hostel charges, books, equipment, exam fees, and, for students heading overseas, travel and insurance costs as well. On the cost side, the bank keeps entry-level borrowing simple by waiving margin money altogether on loans up to Rs 4 lakh, removing the need for upfront personal contribution on smaller loan amounts. Central Bank also runs subsidy schemes aimed at easing the interest burden for economically weaker applicants, and it has folded its offerings into the government's centralized Vidya Lakshmi loan portal for easier discovery and comparison.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Cent Vidyarthi loan for study abroad, an applicant generally needs to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen
  • Must have secured admission to a recognized institution abroad, through either an entrance exam or a merit-based selection process, after completing 10+2 (or an equivalent qualification)
  • Must generally hold a minimum of 50% marks in the last qualifying examination, with a 10% relaxation extended to SC/ST and PwBD candidates
  • Loans above a certain threshold require a co-applicant/guarantor and, depending on the amount, collateral security

Documents required

Applicants are typically asked to submit:

  • A government-issued photo ID such as PAN card, passport, driving licence, voter ID, or Aadhaar
  • Proof of current address, which can be a recent utility bill, driving licence, or Aadhaar
  • Academic records - 10th and 12th mark sheets, along with semester-wise results for any undergraduate study already completed
  • Scores from relevant entrance or language tests, such as GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS, where applicable
  • The offer or admission letter from the overseas institution (a conditional offer is generally accepted)
  • An itemized cost statement issued by the university, showing tuition and living expense estimates
  • Income and KYC documents for the co-applicant/guarantor, plus collateral paperwork where the loan amount requires security

Since the bank may request supplementary documents once it reviews an individual applicant's profile, it's worth confirming the exact checklist with the branch before submission.

Repayment

Central Bank of India structures repayment around a moratorium period, during which the student isn't required to make regular EMI payments. This moratorium runs for the full duration of the course plus one additional year, after which EMIs begin and continue for up to 15 years, with the instalment amount factoring in interest that accrued during the study and moratorium phases. Borrowers who choose to service interest payments during the study/moratorium window rather than deferring them can receive a 1% interest rate discount, which noticeably reduces the total interest paid over the loan's life. There are no prepayment penalties, so students can close the loan early without extra cost once they start earning.

How to apply

  • Visit a branch or go online - applicants can either walk into a nearby Central Bank of India branch or go to the bank's official website and navigate to the education loans section.
  • Select the right scheme - confirm that Cent Vidyarthi (or the relevant abroad-study variant) matches your course and destination.
  • Fill out the application form - complete the loan application with your personal, academic, and course details.
  • Upload/submit documents - attach the KYC, academic, admission, and cost-of-study documents listed above.
  • Alternative route via Vidya Lakshmi - applicants can also apply through the Vidya Lakshmi Portal, the common government platform that lets students apply to multiple bank education loan schemes through a single application.
  • Track and follow up - application status can be tracked through the bank's online portal, or by staying in touch with the branch handling the file.
