Overview
Avanse Financial Services is a Reserve Bank of India-regulated Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) that specialises in education financing for Indian students, both for domestic and international study programs. The company counts Warburg Pincus and the International Finance Corporation (an arm of the World Bank Group) among its major shareholders.
Avanse has positioned itself as a fast, tech-driven alternative to traditional bank education loans, with digital application tracking, doorstep document pickup, and quicker turnaround times. Since it operates as an NBFC rather than a bank, Avanse routes the disbursed loan amount through a partner bank account rather than transferring funds directly, though the process remains seamless for the borrower. It funds courses across STEM, management, and non-STEM disciplines at recognised institutions in over 46 countries, along with select programs in India.
Eligibility
To qualify for an Avanse education loan, applicants generally need to meet the following criteria:
- Must be an Indian citizen, aged 18 years or above at the time of application
- Must have a confirmed admission offer from a recognised university or institution (in India or abroad)
- Eligible courses include graduate and postgraduate degrees, diploma programs, and select vocational or executive programs approved by Avanse
- A co-applicant is typically required - usually a parent, sibling, spouse, or close relative - who must also be an Indian citizen
- The loan can be availed even for admissions secured through management quota or paid seats
- Part-time, online, and correspondence courses may also be considered, subject to meeting Avanse's internal criteria
- A strong academic record and competitive entrance exam scores (GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS/SAT/ACT, where applicable) can improve loan terms, though they aren't the sole deciding factor
Documents required
For the Student Applicant:
- Duly filled application form with photograph
- KYC documents (PAN card, Aadhaar card, passport)
- Proof of current and permanent address
- Academic records - mark sheets, entrance exam scores, and standardised test results
- Confirmed admission/offer letter from the university
- Passport (mandatory for studying abroad)
For the Co-Applicant:
- KYC and address proof documents
- Income proof — salary slips and Form 16 for salaried co-applicants, or ITR and business proof for self-employed co-applicants
- Bank statements for the last 6 months
- Signed consent/co-applicant declaration form
For Secured Loans (if collateral is offered):
- Property documents for tangible security (residential property)
- Documents for intangible/liquid security such as fixed deposits, life insurance policies, or government bonds
Repayment
Avanse offers a moratorium period that typically covers the entire course duration plus an additional 6 to 12 months, or up to 3 months after the student secures employment, whichever comes first. Importantly, interest begins accruing from the date of loan disbursement, even during this grace period — it is not an interest-free window.
Borrowers can choose from a few repayment structures:
- Full EMI during the course – Begin repaying principal and interest immediately, reducing overall interest burden
- Partial/Simple Interest servicing during moratorium – Pay only the interest portion while studying, easing the transition into full repayment later
- Step-up repayment – EMIs start low and increase gradually as post-graduation income grows
- Standard post-moratorium repayment – Full EMIs begin only after the moratorium period ends
The maximum repayment tenure extends up to 15 years, inclusive of the moratorium. Avanse generally does not charge a prepayment penalty once the loan has been active for 6 months, allowing borrowers to close the loan early without extra cost.
How to apply
Online application → document upload → underwriting → sanction → agreement → disbursal schedule aligned to fees.
- Check Eligibility – Use Avanse's online eligibility calculator by entering academic, income, and co-applicant details to get an estimated sanction amount
- Talk to a Loan Counsellor – Avanse typically assigns a representative to guide applicants through eligibility checks, course-specific queries, and next steps
- Fill the Application Form – Complete the online application with accurate personal, academic, and financial information
- Upload Documents – Submit KYC, academic records, admission proof, and co-applicant financial documents in legible digital format
- Verification – Avanse's team verifies the submitted documents and evaluates the application
- Loan Sanction – On approval, a sanction letter is issued via SMS/email, generally within 3 working days for complete applications
- Disbursal – Once finalised, the loan amount is credited — tuition fees are usually transferred directly to the institution, while living expenses go to the applicant's account
